The Soup City Block Party

The Campbell Block Party was more than a neighborhood gathering, it was a cultural cornerstone rooted in tradition, pride, and unity. Sponsored by the legendary Campbell Legionettes Drill Team and guided by the unwavering leadership of Mr. Raleigh “Ronnie” Rupert, this event has deep roots stretching back to 1969.

Under Ronnie’s leadership, the Campbell Block Party grew into a weekend of celebration, recognition, and joy; kicking off with the African American Recognition Parade, led proudly by the Campbell Legionettes and Legioners. The parade route, starting at Penhale School and ending at the Michael J. Kirwan Homes, led into a vibrant festival featuring ceremonies, drill competitions, dance contests, Ms. Bessie’s candy apples and family-centered fun. The event became a symbol of solidarity, a platform to honor outstanding African Americans, and a reminder of the strength and spirit of the Campbell community.

The Soup City Block Party was brought to life by Terence Walker Jr. and the late Jerri Butler-Montgomery, inspired by a shared vision of community and connection. Their goal was to revive the spirit of the beloved Campbell Block Party, bringing back some its most cherished traditions while creating new memories for future generations.

As we celebrate The Soup City Block Party in the years to come, we do so with deep respect for the history that shaped us. This year’s event is not only a tribute to the legacy of Mr. Raleigh Rupert and the Campbell Block Party but a step toward building new traditions, ones that honor the past while inspiring future generations.
